Due to scheduled repairs by Northern Water on a connection to our Carter Lake Raw Water Pipeline, we are temporarily using a blend of water from Little Thompson Water District and Berthoud Reservoir from 2/24–3/3. In past instances when we've used Berthoud Reservoir, some residents have reported taste and odor changes. While the water may have an earthy smell, it continues to meet and exceed all state drinking water regulations set by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.
The changes in taste and odor are due to naturally occurring compounds produced by algae present in lakes and reservoirs. While these compounds are completely safe, they can sometimes cause a musty or earthy taste in drinking water.
The distribution team is actively adjusting treatment levels, including chlorine and powdered activated carbon, to help minimize these effects.
If you have any further concerns or would like us to test the water at your home, we can schedule a time for a treatment plant staff member to do so.
