Join us as the Town of Berthoud seeks to become the first Dark Sky Certified Community along the Front Range through Dark Sky International. What is a Dark Sky Community? An International Dark Sky Community (IDSC) is a town, city, municipality or other similar political entity that has shown exceptional dedication to the preservation of the night sky through the implementation and enforcement of quality light policies, dark sky education, and citizen support of dark sky conservation.

What is a Dark Sky?

A “dark sky” refers to a nighttime environment with minimal light pollution — where starlight, the Milky Way, planets, and other celestial wonders remain clearly visible. Unfortunately, artificial lighting from towns and cities often washes out that beauty, creating what’s called skyglow, and hiding the natural night.

Benefits of a dark sky:

  • Sustainability Opportunity: By embracing responsible lighting practices (like shielded fixtures and motion sensors), Berthoud can reduce energy costs and environmental impact.

  • Wildlife Protection: Limiting unnecessary nighttime lighting helps preserve natural habitats for local wildlife — especially species sensitive to disruption.

  • Quality of Life: Dark skies enhance the quality of night for residents. Better lighting design can maintain safety while minimizing glare and light intrusion into homes.

  • Community Identity: If Berthoud participates in DarkSky’s programs (or similar local efforts), it could become a model for dark-sky community stewardship — a place that values its night heritage.

  • Tourism Potential: Protecting our night skies can also be an asset for Astro-tourism, bringing in visitors who want to stargaze, hike after dark, or simply enjoy the tranquility of a truly dark night.
