One Agency, One Mission: Public Safety
Our Mission is to protect and preserve life, liberty and property by providing superior public safety services in Larimer County.
374 employees work for the Sheriff's Office serving the citizens of Larimer County. An annual budget of just under forty million dollars is used to operate the agency in order to fulfill the statutory duties of the Sheriff. The statutory duties of the Sheriff are:

- Transportation of Prisoners
- Fire Warden
- Search and Rescue
- Hazardous Materials
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office is divided into five divisions:

- Support Services Division In addition to the dedicated people who work at the Sheriff's Office, hundreds of committed volunteers assist us in our duties every day in order that we may better serve the citizens of Larimer County.

The LCSO contract provides for the following sworn officers assigned to Berthoud:
- 1 Full-Time Sergeant
- 2 Full-Time Corporals
- 2 Full-Time School Resource Officers
- 6 Full-Time Deputies
- 1 Front Desk Deputy
- 1 Community Impact Deputy
- 1 Half-time Investigator
Deputies assigned to Berthoud focus on providing a community oriented law enforcement presence within the town. Deputies are responsible for traffic enforcement and criminal law enforcement in the Town of Berthoud. They enforce Berthoud's Municipal Ordinances in addition to applicable county, state and federal laws.
Deputies in Berthoud conduct their patrol duties using marked patrol cars, bicycles, and foot patrols. Deputies assist the School Resource Officer in handling safety programs and criminal activity at the schools located in Berthoud in addition to attending school activities. Deputies assigned to Berthoud, along with Reserve Deputies, Explorer Scouts, and Citizen Volunteers, work with the schools, town staff, business owners, and other citizen groups to identify the needs of the community and respond to those needs.
The Sheriff's Office participates in community activities including Berthoud Day, Oktoberfest activities, and the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Days.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with Poudre School District (PSD) and Thompson School District (TSD), operates a School Resource Officer (SRO) program.
Specially trained deputies are assigned to schools located within the towns of Berthoud, Timnath, and Wellington, as well as those in unincorporated Larimer County. The training focuses on school safety and security, conflict resolution, handling crime within the schools, teaching classes, and helping families locate the resources necessary to raise healthy children.
SROs are assisted by other patrol deputies in conducting patrols in and around the schools as well as handling calls for service within the schools. Reserve deputies participate in a School Marshal Program within the Thompson School District.
SROs foster a positive relationship with school staff, parents, and students. The SRO works closely with school administrators in developing and implementing plans for school safety.
While there is currently not an SRO assigned to private schools in unincorporated Larimer County, SROs assigned to this program assist these schools with safety plans and education of students. The SRO supervisor and other patrol deputies fill the gap in providing services to these schools.

The Berthoud Fire Protection District is responsible for fire protection, Emergency Medical Services, public fire education, and prevention duties for an area of 98 square miles within Larimer, Boulder, and Weld counties.

Whether you choose to walk, bike or drive as your primary means of transportation, everyone is a pedestrian at some point. This is why, in the Town of Berthoud, pedestrian safety is a top priority.
As our community continues to grow, it's important that we exercise extra caution to prevent accidents in areas of high pedestrian traffic, like downtown, school zones and parks.
Help us improve our town's walkability by following these safety tips for accident prevention.
For walkers:
- Whenever you have the option, use sidewalks. Where there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from the side of the road as possible.
- Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections whenever possible. If there is no crosswalk, wait for a gap in traffic large enough that you can easily make it across the street without needing to slow down traffic. Make sure you have visibility.
- Limit the amount of time you spend looking at your phone-distracted pedestrians can cause an accident just as easily as distracted drivers.
- Make sure wherever you're walking you're easily visible. Consider wearing reflective clothing or bringing a flashlight or headlamp when walking at night.
- Begin teaching children safe walking rules as early as possible.
For drivers:
- Always slow down or stop at crosswalks and intersections when pedestrians are present, and never pass other vehicles stopped at a crosswalk-they may be blocking pedestrians from view.
- Use extreme caution when backing up or driving in hard-to-see conditions.
- Never text or look at your phone while driving, or drive under the influence of alcohol.
- Minimize cell phone use. There's no safe level of taking your eyes off the road.
- Don't exceed speed limits and keep your eyes open for pedestrians.
Studies have found that breathing secondhand smoke is a cause for disease in non-smokers and reducing the exposure of secondhand smoke decreases the risk of these deadly diseases. The intent of this ordinance is to protect the public health, safety and welfare of Berthoud's residents and visitors by prohibiting smoking in areas that are used by or are open to the public.
Enforcement begins November 10, 2018.
Prohibited Areas & Types of Businesses
To reduce exposure to tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke and smoke or aerosol generated from electronic smoking devices, smoking is not permitted in an indoor area. This includes:
- Restaurants, food service establishments and bars
- Public buildings and meeting places
- Any public transportation owned or operated by the Town of Berthoud
- Healthcare facilities including but not limited to hospitals, healthcare clinics and doctor's offices
- Restrooms, lobbies and hallways of common areas, whether private or public
- Bowling alleys and billiard or pool halls
- A 15-foot perimeter outside of the entrances of all buildings and facilities located within Berthoud
Permitted Smoking Areas
Smoking is permitted in the following areas:
- A private home or residence (except those in use for public services)
- A private automobile unless used for business.
- Retail tobacco businesses
- A place of business that is not open to the public
